Hanifi Bariş is a Lecturer in the Department of Politics and International Relations at the University of Aberdeen. He holds a PhD in Political Theory from the Centre for Citizenship, Civil Society and Rule of Law (CISRUL) at Aberdeen, an MA in Inter-Asia NGO Studies from Sungkonghoe University, and a law degree from Başkent University. His research focuses on council democracy, autonomy frameworks, and Kurdish political movements.

His research examines experiments of council democracy in Kurdish regions and indigenous movements in Mexico, analyzing their reconciliation with national constitutional frameworks. He received the Leverhulme Early Career Fellowship (2019-2023) for this work, exploring how communal governance models challenge parliamentary sovereignty.
