Hani El-Gabalawy

Hani El-Gabalawy is a Professor of Medicine and Immunology at the University of Manitoba's Max Rady College of Medicine, holding the Endowed Rheumatology Research Chair. His research focuses on understanding the mechanisms of rheumatoid arthritis (RA), particularly in Indigenous populations. He leads a longitudinal cohort study of at-risk First Nations relatives, funded by CIHR since 2004. Collaborations span institutions in Canada, the U.S., and the Netherlands.

Research interests include autoimmune mechanisms, nutritional interventions for RA prevention, and Indigenous health equity. He has authored key chapters on RA synovial pathology and pioneered studies on preclinical RA autoimmunity.

Notable awards include the Canadian Rheumatology Association Masters Award and the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal. He chairs the Arthritis Society’s integrated Scientific and Medical Advisory Committee.
