Professor Hana Worthen is an Associate Professor of Theatre and Comparative Literature at Barnard College, Columbia University. Her research focuses on animal communication, embodied translation, interspecies justice, and the performative dimensions of political ideologies such as communism, national socialism, neoliberal humanism, and democracy. She holds a B.A. in German Philology and a Ph.D. in Theatre Research from the University of Helsinki, Finland.
Her academic work has been recognized with awards from prestigious institutions including the DAAD, Czech Academy, Finnish Academy, and the Mellon Foundation. She is the author of Humanism, Drama, and Performance: Unwriting Theatre (2020), co-editor of Finland’s Holocaust: Silences of History (2013), and author of Playing Nordic (2007). Her current project explores translation as a species activity through critical animal studies.
