Hampus Olsson is a Senior Lecturer at the Swedish Institute of Classical Studies in Rome and an Affiliated Researcher at Lund University's Department of Archaeology and Ancient History within the Faculties of Humanities and Theology. Originally from Kristinehamn, Värmland, he completed his doctoral studies at Lund University in 2021 after being accepted into the doctoral program in 2014.
His educational background includes extensive studies in Uppsala where he pursued courses in Latin and Greek alongside his focus on the Ancient World. He has participated in numerous archaeological field projects across Italy, including significant work at San Giovenale, Blera, Tarquinia, and Rionero in Vulture.
Dr. Olsson specializes in Classical archaeology with particular expertise in Etruscan studies and ancient urban development. His research examines socio-political transformations in peripheral South Etruscan regions during Rome's expansion (450-50 BC), analyzing settlement patterns and elite composition changes. He employs innovative multi-resolution archaeological methods to investigate ancient urbanism, with particular focus on the Blera region.
His recent publications demonstrate a consistent focus on Etruscan urban development, with particular emphasis on the Blera region and its transformation during the period of Roman expansion. His work combines traditional archaeological survey methods with advanced geospatial analysis to reveal patterns of cultural change.
Dr. Olsson currently leads the significant research project 'Unveiling the city: Multi-resolution investigation on the Petrolo plateau of Blera,' a collaborative effort between the Swedish Institute in Rome and researchers from Lund University, Istanbul University, and the Gothenburg International Organ Academy. This project represents cutting-edge archaeological methodology applied to ancient urban studies.
He has held several important academic roles including Doktorandrepresentant for Antikens kultur och samhällsliv at the Swedish Institute in Rome (2020-2023) and served on the board of Föreningen Svenska Rominstitutets Vänner in Lund (2015-2022). He actively participates in international conferences including the 30th EAA Annual Meeting in Rome (2024).
