Fanny Kärfve is a Researcher in Classical Archaeology and Ancient History at Lund University's Department of Archaeology and Ancient History, within the Faculty of Humanities and Theology. She completed her doctoral dissertation titled "Greeting the visitor. A contextualising study of fauces-mosaics in Pompeii" in spring 2022.
Her research focuses on classical archaeology with particular emphasis on Roman urban architecture and decoration. Dr. Kärfve has participated in numerous field excavations across the Mediterranean, including in Italy, Greece, and Cyprus. She has been a member of the Swedish Pompeii Project since 2006 and has extended her research interests to Ostia, Rome's ancient harbor city. Her work examines how architectural elements, particularly mosaics in transitional spaces like house entrances, functioned as communication between homeowners and visitors.
Dr. Kärfve's scholarly contributions span multiple areas of ancient studies. She serves as the publisher of Medusa, the Swedish journal of antiquity since 2021, and has been a member of the editorial staff since 2014. She is actively involved with several academic organizations related to classical studies, including serving on the boards of Friends of the Swedish Institutes in Rome and Athens.

Dr. Kärfve has participated in multiple research projects, including the active "RE-OSTRAKON: 3D Scanning and metadata registration of archaeological artifacts" project at Lund University Library. She has also been a visiting researcher at the Swedish Institute of Classical Studies in Rome on multiple occasions (2019, 2023, 2024), demonstrating her active engagement with the international scholarly community.
