Hamish Symington is a Postdoctoral Research Associate and Junior Research Fellow at Queens’ College, Cambridge, affiliated with the Department of Plant Sciences. His work bridges evolutionary biology and pollination ecology, focusing on floral traits that influence pollinator behavior and crop sustainability. He holds a PhD in Plant Sciences from the University of Cambridge (2022) and a BA in Biochemistry (2002).
His research explores nectar spur genetics in Linaria vulgaris, floral color evolution in Aethionema, and strawberry cultivar variations affecting pollinators. Articles highlight his interdisciplinary approach to floral biomechanics, pollinator decision-making, and data tools like SpotCard.
- STEM for Britain poster competition second prize (2022)
- HE Woodman Thesis Prize runner-up (2023)
- Winner of Cambridge BBSRC DTP 'Best Talk' (2021)
Hamish mentors undergraduates, lectures on plant evolution, and contributes to public engagement through BBC appearances and science communication videos. He is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and actively involved in academic governance.
