Hamish Chalmers is a Senior Departmental Lecturer and Course Director of the MSc Applied Linguistics for Language Teaching (ALLT) at the University of Oxford. He co-directs the Oxford Education Deanery and oversees the International Database of Education Systematic Reviews (IDESR.org). His roles include lecturing on the MSc Applied Linguistics & Second Language Acquisition (ALSLA) and supervising doctoral students.
His research focuses on evaluating pedagogical approaches for multilingual learners, particularly the use of first languages in English-medium classrooms. Methodological interests include randomized trials and systematic reviews, with advocacy for user engagement in research. He leads the REAL (Research in EAL) group at the Department of Education.
Notable projects include setting research priorities for EAL education and assessing inter-instrument reliability in educational research. He has been funded by the John Fell Fund and the Education Endowment Foundation (EEF). Current doctoral students include Eman Albalooshi, Xiaoying Wu, and Catherine Hamilton.
Key publications include The ResearchED Guide to English As an Additional Language and studies on translanguaging pedagogy, EAL learner outcomes, and systematic review methodologies. His work emphasizes evidence-based practices and addresses gaps in multilingual education research.
