Dr. Haly Neely is an Assistant Professor of Applied Soil Physics at Washington State University (WSU), affiliated with the Department of Crop and Soil Sciences within the College of Agricultural, Human, and Natural Resource Sciences. His research focuses on quantifying soil-water-plant interactions to enhance soil health and ecosystem resilience, emphasizing water conservation through soil health practices and sensor technology for soil moisture dynamics. He teaches courses including SoilS 374 (Introduction to Remote Sensing), AgTM 405 (Advanced Precision Agriculture), and CS/PP 403/503 (Advanced Cropping Systems).
Dr. Neely holds a Ph.D. in Soil Science from Texas A&M University (2014), an M.S. in Soil Science from WSU (2010), and a B.S. in Agricultural Journalism from WSU (2008). His work integrates remote sensing (e.g., UAV-based thermal imaging) with soil physics to improve agricultural practices, particularly in dryland systems. Key contributions include developing tools for precision agriculture, assessing soil health frameworks, and calibrating sensor technologies for crop monitoring.
His recent research highlights include evaluating UAS thermal imagery for cotton yield prediction and analyzing soil health in thermic regions using the SMAF framework. He collaborates on projects exploring cropping system diversity impacts on wheat productivity and magnetic resonance imaging of root systems in clayey soils. His work bridges soil science, technology, and sustainable agriculture to address regional and global challenges.
