Halvard Johannessen

Halvard Johannessen is an Associate Professor in Practical Theology at the Faculty of Theology, University of Oslo. He serves as Project Manager for ADAPT (2023-2026), Program Director for Professional Studies in Theology, and Program Director for Theology and Pastoral Practice. He is actively involved in various committees including the Theological Committee, KIFO's Supervisory Board, and the National Program Council for cand.theol. at the University of Oslo.

His educational background includes a PhD from the University of Oslo (2017) with the thesis 'The Spirituality of Secularization,' a Teaching Leadership Program (2019), and a Cand.theol. degree (2000). He was ordained as a priest in the Church of Norway in 2003 and has practical experience as a chaplain and associate priest.

Dr. Johannessen's research focuses on practical theology with emphasis on pastoral theology, the interaction between cultural change and religious change, and the role of priests in contemporary society. His work examines how theological notions operate in practical contexts, drawing on Charles Taylor's social philosophy. His upcoming monograph 'Priest' (2025) contributes to theological professional theory by exploring the historical sources of the priestly role and its contemporary understanding. His research methodology combines written source analysis with empirical studies, as evidenced by his work on centering prayer among Norwegian Church participants.

His publications span from 2010 to 2023, showing consistent scholarly output in practical theology, with recent emphasis on professional theological theory, church governance, and the intersection of secular culture with religious practice. His work demonstrates a trajectory from analyzing specific theological concepts to broader professional and institutional questions within the Church of Norway.

He has received recognition through his extensive publication record in journals such as the Journal of Practical Theology (TPT) and contributions to academic volumes on practical theology topics.

As an educator, Dr. Johannessen teaches practical-theological courses in the professional theology program and various continuing education courses. He has course responsibility for numerous advanced courses including TEOL4901 Specialization Thesis and TEOL4580 Master's Thesis in Theology and Pastoral Practice. His leadership roles include the ADAPT project, a pedagogical development initiative for second-career students in theology, supported by HK-DIR in collaboration with the Nidaros diocese.

His previous leadership roles include Program Director for Bachelor's and Master's Degree Programs in Theology, responsible editor for Nytt norsk kirkeblad, and Chair of the National Council for Practical Theology (2008-2016).
