Haiwei Dong is an Adjunct Professor at the University of Ottawa's School of Computer Science and Electrical Engineering and a Principal Researcher at Huawei Technologies Canada. He previously served as a Principal Engineer at Huawei, leading teams in autonomous driving and metaverse-related projects. His academic background includes postdoctoral fellowships at the University of Ottawa (2013–2016), New York University Abu Dhabi, and the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (2011–2012), as well as a research stint at the University of Toronto (2011–2012).
He holds a PhD from Kobe University (Japan, 2010) and a Master of Engineering from Shanghai Jiao Tong University (China, 2008).
His research interests span Artificial Intelligence, Multimedia, Metaverse, Robotics, Autonomous Systems, and Cybersecurity. His work includes applying AI to optimize large language models, code generation, software vulnerability detection, and autonomous vehicle systems. He has also explored 3D reconstruction, extended reality, and robotics applications in healthcare. He co-authored 89 scientific publications, including 46 journal articles, 33 conference papers, and 10 book chapters, primarily in IEEE/ACM venues.
Dr. Dong currently serves as an Associate Editor for ACM Transactions on Multimedia Computing, Communications, and Applications and IEEE Consumer Electronics Magazine, and as a Columnist for IEEE Multimedia Magazine (all since 2022). He has delivered invited talks at institutions such as the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, King’s College London, and the Swiss AI Lab IDSIA.
He has mentored over 41 researchers, including 11 PhD students, 20 master’s students, and 7 interns, many of whom now hold roles at top universities like Berkeley, Columbia, and Cornell, or at leading tech firms such as Google, Apple, and IBM. He also co-founded a robotics research lab at NYU Abu Dhabi during his postdoctoral tenure.
Professional memberships include Emeritus status with the IEEE (since 2016) and ACM (since 2018), and membership in the Ontario Professional Engineers (P.Eng., since 2017).
