Hairong Guan is a Professor of Chemistry at the University of Cincinnati (UC), within the College of Arts and Sciences. He joined UC in 2007 and has held roles including the Stella and Hoke S. Greene Chair in Catalytic Chemistry (2017–2020). His research group focuses on catalysis with first-row transition metals, metal hydrides, and surface-catalyzed reactions, with applications in CO₂ reduction, solar energy conversion, and biomass utilization. He holds a Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry from Columbia University (2005) and a B.S. in Chemistry from Peking University (2000).

Research Interests:
Guan's work emphasizes the design of catalysts using Earth-abundant metals (e.g., iron, nickel, cobalt) to enable sustainable chemical processes. His group explores reaction mechanisms, metal-ligand cooperativity, and the activation of small molecules like CO₂ and silanes. He has pioneered methods for hydrogenation of esters, nitriles, and aldehydes under mild conditions, leveraging pincer ligand platforms for enhanced catalytic efficiency.

He has secured grants from the National Science Foundation (NSF), Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, and Procter & Gamble Company. Notable awards include the NSF CAREER Award (2010–2015), Alfred P. Sloan Research Fellowship (2013–2015), and Humboldt Research Fellowship (2018–2020). He is also recognized as a Lowenstein Scholar and Golden Goggles Lectureship recipient.
