Hailay Gesesew

Hailay Gesesew is an Associate Professor of Epidemiology and Honorary Researcher at Lancaster University's Faculty of Health and Medicine. He holds a Principal Research Fellow position with Australia's National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC). His work focuses on HIV care continuum in low- and middle-income countries, conflict-affected health systems, and social determinants of health. He collaborates with Ethiopian research institutes and universities.

Current research includes NHMRC-funded projects on HIV peer counselors in Ethiopia (2020-2024) and a cluster randomized trial evaluating the 'Teach-Test-Link-Trace' model. Other projects address CALD youth wellbeing in South Australia and vicarious trauma among Tigrayan Australians.

As a mixed-methods researcher, Gesesew co-supervises 9 PhD students exploring conflict, HIV care, universal health coverage, and youth mental wellbeing. He leads grants totaling over AUD 5M from NHMRC, The Hospital Research Foundation, and Primary Health Network Adelaide.
