Haidong Gu is an Associate Professor in the Department of Biological Sciences at Wayne State University, affiliated with the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. His research focuses on understanding how herpes simplex virus 1 (HSV-1) employs viral proteins like ICP0 to counteract host antiviral defenses. The Gu Lab investigates the molecular mechanisms of viral immune evasion, particularly the role of ND10 nuclear bodies and ubiquitin-mediated protein degradation.
Education includes a Ph.D. in Molecular Cellular Biochemistry from Ohio State University (2001) and postdoctoral training at the University of Chicago (2011). He has secured significant NIH funding (R01AI18992, $1.88M) to study ICP0’s functional domains in HSV-1 replication.
Research interests emphasize viral-host interactions, with a focus on how HSV-1 manipulates cellular pathways to ensure successful infection. Key topics include ICP0’s E3 ubiquitin ligase activity targeting PML and other ND10 components, and its role in suppressing chromatin-mediated gene silencing.
