Hadley C. Bergstrom is an Associate Professor of Psychological Science at Vassar College, affiliated with the Neuroscience and Behavior program. With a BS from the University of Oregon and MA/PhD from George Mason University, he has been at Vassar since 2015. His research investigates the neural mechanisms underlying learning, memory consolidation, and fear generalization using cutting-edge neuroscience techniques.
Research focuses include:
- Neural plasticity in fear memory formation and extinction
- Impact of substance exposure (alcohol/nicotine) on brain structure
- Gut-brain axis influences on emotional behavior
- Development of novel behavioral assays for cognitive flexibility
His recent publications demonstrate strong emphasis on translational neuroscience, with studies bridging molecular mechanisms (dendritic spine dynamics), systems-level circuitry (corticolimbic networks), and behavioral outputs (fear generalization patterns). Article keywords frequently include neuroplasticity, amygdala function, and preclinical models of anxiety disorders.
Dr. Bergstrom directs the Memory Neuroscience Lab, funded by an NIMH R15 grant. The lab utilizes chemogenetic tools, confocal microscopy (via NSF-funded instrumentation), and multimodal behavioral analysis. He actively mentors undergraduate researchers, with recent students securing positions at leading institutes including Broad Institute and NIMH.
