Assoc. Prof. Hatice İkten serves as an Associate Professor in the Department of Agricultural Biotechnology at Akdeniz University's Faculty of Agriculture since 2020, having previously held the position of Assistant Professor from 2011 to 2018. Her academic foundation includes a Doctorate in Horticulture from Ege University (2004-2007), a Postgraduate degree from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (1998-2000), and additional postgraduate and undergraduate studies in Horticulture from Van Yüzüncü Yıl University and Ege University respectively.
Her educational journey is documented through multiple degrees: Undergraduate (1985-1989) and Doctorate (2004-2007) from Ege University, Postgraduate studies at Van Yüzüncü Yıl University (1990-1992) and the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (1998-2000). Her doctoral thesis focused on fig genotypes characterization and molecular marker identification for sex determination and fruit characteristics.
Prof. İkten's research centers on plant molecular genetics with emphasis on genetic diversity analysis, molecular marker development, and horticultural crop breeding. Her work primarily targets economically important species including fig (Ficus carica), grapevine (Vitis vinifera), myrtle (Myrtus communis), artichoke (Cynara scolymus), and various bean species. A significant portion of her research addresses sex determination mechanisms in dioecious plants like fig, where she has developed gender-specific molecular markers applicable in breeding programs.
Analysis of her publication record reveals consistent application of molecular techniques (SSR, AFLP, SRAP, iPBS, ISSR) across diverse plant species, with increasing sophistication in population genetics approaches. Her research demonstrates a clear trajectory from basic molecular characterization toward applied breeding solutions, particularly in sex determination for fig, cold tolerance mechanisms in beans, and conservation of endangered Turkish plant varieties. The geographical focus remains predominantly on Turkish germplasm, with significant contributions to documenting local genetic resources.
Prof. İkten has successfully supervised 7 graduate students across multiple research topics including cucumber disease resistance, artichoke molecular characterization, and fig sex determination. She has secured funding for numerous research projects through higher education institutions and TUBITAK, with recent projects examining cold stress effects on tomato, fertilization impacts on tomato quality, and molecular characterization of various crops.
Her professional activities include peer review services for SCI journals like Turkish Journal of Botany and active participation in international scientific forums including the International Horticultural Congress, Balkan Symposium on Fruit Growing, and various plant breeding congresses held across Turkey, Europe, and the United States, demonstrating the international recognition of her research contributions.
