Ir Professor H.C. MAN serves as Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and holds dual Chair Professorships in Manufacturing Engineering and Materials Engineering at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, while directing the PolyU-Wuxi Technology and Innovation Research Institute and University Research Facility in 3D Printing (U3DP). His leadership established Hong Kong's first Department of Aeronautical and Aviation Engineering in 2016 and pioneered the region's initial laser materials processing center through Innovation and Technology Development Committee funding.
Professor Man's research pioneers additive manufacturing of challenging biocompatible metals including Magnesium and Shape Memory Alloys, high-power laser welding of dissimilar metals, and surface engineering for enhanced wear resistance. His work targets revolutionary improvements in speed, quality, and cost-efficiency for manufacturing critical engineering components and biomedical implants, with recent breakthroughs in overcoming thermal limitations of 3D-printed Magnesium alloys.
His scientific excellence is recognized through prestigious fellowships: Hong Kong Academy of Engineering Science, Laser Institute of America (USA), and Institute of Materials, Mining and Minerals (UK), highlighting international impact in laser processing and materials science.
Professor Man demonstrates exceptional knowledge transfer through U3DP's academic-industrial partnerships and pandemic response, rapidly producing over 1,000 3D-printed face shields for Hong Kong hospitals in 2020. As Director of the Research Institute for Advanced Manufacturing, he drives collaborative innovation in manufacturing technologies while mentoring future engineers through PolyU's specialized facilities.
