Professor Supriyo Ganguly is a faculty member at Cranfield University's Welding and Additive Manufacturing Centre, specializing in Welding and Additive Materials Science. He joined Cranfield in 2008 as a lecturer, transitioning from research roles at the Manchester Materials Science Centre and Open University. His PhD (2004) focused on neutron and synchrotron X-ray diffraction for residual stress analysis in welded aerospace alloys. Prior to academia, he worked in industry as a metallurgist for Tata Steel and Usha Martin Industries.
Research Interests: Dr. Ganguly's work centers on advanced welding and additive manufacturing technologies, particularly in dissimilar metal joining, laser-arc hybrid processes, and functional surface engineering. He explores microstructural modifications to enhance structural integrity and productivity. Current projects include laser-based joining of dissimilar metals, fatigue-resistant additively manufactured components, and corrosion mitigation in marine environments.
Grants & Collaborations: He leads an EPSRC-funded project on laser joining of dissimilar metals and co-invests in the EPSRC Centre for Laser-based Production Processes. Collaborations span industries like aerospace (Airbus, BAE Systems), oil/gas, and nuclear sectors. He supervises 6 PhD students and 2 post-doctoral researchers.
Labs & Teams: His research is conducted at Cranfield's advanced manufacturing facilities, focusing on additive manufacturing, laser processing, and residual stress analysis. Key equipment includes neutron diffraction systems and advanced welding simulation tools.
