H E Hinson, MD, MCR is a Professor of Clinical Neurology at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) and a Neurointensivist at Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital and Trauma Center. She serves as a national leader in equity initiatives within neurology and is actively involved in research focused on acute neurotrauma and precision medicine approaches.
Her educational background includes:
- MD from University of Texas Health Science Center, San Antonio (2005)
- Neurology residency at University of Maryland (2009)
- Neurocritical Care fellowship at Johns Hopkins University (2011)
- Master of Clinical Research from Oregon Health and Science University (2016)
Dr. Hinson's research focuses on developing precision strategies for the treatment of acute neurotrauma by integrating high-dimensional molecular and clinical data to create predictive analytic models of clinically relevant endpoints. Her laboratory employs machine learning techniques to analyze complex datasets generated during neurological critical care. She is deeply involved in biomarker discovery in acute clinical settings, particularly using mass spectrometry for global discovery proteomics. A significant portion of her work addresses health equity, with a particular emphasis on LGBTQI+ health in neurology, where she founded the American Academy of Neurology's LGBTQI section in 2017.
Her most recent publications reveal a strong focus on traumatic brain injury management, cerebral edema treatment, biomarker validation, and health equity in neurological care. Her research bridges clinical neurology, critical care, data science, and social justice, with notable contributions to both patient care protocols and professional guidelines for inclusive practice.
Professional leadership includes:
- Chair of the Clinic Research Subcommittee at the American Academy of Neurology
- Vice Chair of the Science Committee at the American Academy of Neurology
- Member of the Academic Neurology Committee at the American Academy of Neurology
- Member of editorial boards for Neurology, Stroke, and Neurotrauma journals
- EDI Associate Editor for the journal Neurology
- Member of the American Heart Association's Journal EDI Editorial Board
Dr. Hinson maintains an active NIH-funded research program as Principal Investigator on the K23NS110828 grant 'Predictors of Low-risk Phenotypes after Traumatic Brain Injury Incorporating Proteomic Biomarker Signatures' (2020-2025). She is deeply committed to mentoring underrepresented individuals through programs including BUILD EXITO, NINDS-AAN TRANSCENDS R25, and various leadership development initiatives at the American Academy of Neurology.
The Hinson Lab at UCSF focuses on five key research areas: predictive models in traumatic brain injury, STAT-BRIDGE decision support tools for TBI, autonomic dysfunction after acute brain injury, clinical trials in acute brain injury and spinal cord injury, and protein biomarker discovery in neurotrauma. The lab integrates molecular data with clinical information to develop precision medicine approaches for neurological emergencies.
