Héctor Carrillo is a Professor of Sociology and Gender & Sexuality Studies at Northwestern University. He co-directs the Sexualities Project at Northwestern (SPAN), which focuses on interdisciplinary research and education on sexuality and health in social contexts. His academic journey began at the University of California, Berkeley, where he earned his PhD.
His research spans sexual migration, gender dynamics, HIV/AIDS prevention, and cultural change. Carrillo's work examines transnational interactions between Mexican gay men and U.S.-born partners, the elasticity of heterosexual identity, and the role of genealogical research in shaping gender and sexual narratives. His publications bridge sociology, public health, and queer theory.
Carrillo has received numerous accolades, including the Ruth Benedict Prize, ASA Distinguished Scholarly Book Award, and Thomas and Znaniecki Award. He serves on editorial boards for Sexuality Research and Social Policy, Sexualidad, Salud y Sociedad, and is Senior Editor at Theory and Society. He has held leadership roles in the ASA Sociology of Sexualities Section and HIV/AIDS research initiatives.
