Prof. Günnur DENİZ is a full Professor at Istanbul University's Aziz Sancar Institute of Experimental Medicine, Department of Immunology, where she has served since 2003. She currently holds dual leadership roles as Director of the Institute and Head of the Immunology Department, overseeing research strategy and academic operations.
Education:
- Doctorate in Immunology (1989-1994) - Liverpool John Moores University, UK
- Postgraduate in Physiology (1986-1989) - Istanbul University, Turkey
- Undergraduate in Biology (1981-1985) - Istanbul University, Turkey
Research Focus: Her work centers on translational immunology with emphasis on NK/T cell dysfunction in autoimmune disorders (Behçet's disease, multiple sclerosis), oncology (leukemia, lung cancer), allergy mechanisms, and COVID-19 immunopathology. She employs advanced flow cytometry techniques to investigate immune checkpoint dynamics, cytokine networks, and therapeutic immunomodulation.
Publication Trends: Recent articles (2023-2025) demonstrate strong focus on: 1) Immune cell profiling in cancer microenvironments, 2) Immunogenetic determinants of COVID-19 severity, 3) Novel biomarkers for autoimmune/neurological disorders, and 4) Mechanisms of allergen immunotherapy. Her work frequently intersects clinical medicine with molecular immunology.
Student Advising & Leadership: Has supervised 20+ theses (2001-2023) on topics spanning NK cell biology, asthma pathogenesis, and leukemia immunology. As Institute Director, coordinates interdisciplinary research teams and biotechnology initiatives. Represents Turkey in international cytometry networks.
Professional Development: Maintains active certification in flow cytometry (INDO-US Workshops) and immunogenetics (EFI proficiency). Recent training includes ORPHEUS academic quality standards (2020) and gender equity in academia (EMBO, 2020).
