Kerry S. Campbell is a Professor at Fox Chase Cancer Center, where he serves as Director of the Cell Culture Facility and Co-Director of the Immune Monitoring/Cell Sorting Facility. He is a member of the Cancer Signaling and Microenvironment program and the Center for Immunology. Dr. Campbell has over 25 years of independent research experience focused on natural killer (NK) cell biology and cancer immunology.
Dr. Campbell earned his BS in Pharmacy from the University of Toledo in 1983, followed by a PhD in Pharmacology and Toxicology from Virginia Commonwealth University in 1988. He completed post-doctoral training at the National Jewish Research Center in Denver (1992) and was an Independent Member at the Basel Institute for Immunology in Switzerland (1998).
Dr. Campbell's research focuses on understanding how NK cells recognize and attack tumor cells while remaining tolerant to normal cells. His work specifically investigates killer cell immunoglobulin-like receptors (KIRs) as key regulators of human NK cell function. His lab has extensive expertise in primary human NK cell culture, genetic manipulation, protein biochemistry, and molecular biology techniques.
- Studies molecular mechanisms of NK cell receptor signaling
- Investigates NK, T, and myeloid cell contributions in immune responses to cancer
- Performs immune phenotyping of cancer patients using multiparametric flow cytometry
- Characterizes mechanisms of therapeutic antibodies targeting NK cells
Analysis of Dr. Campbell's recent publications reveals a strong focus on translational immunology, particularly examining NK cell function in various cancer types including multiple myeloma, acute myeloid leukemia, and solid tumors. His work bridges basic NK cell biology with clinical applications, especially in understanding how therapeutic antibodies enhance NK cell antitumor responses through mechanisms like antibody-dependent cellular cytotoxicity (ADCC).
Dr. Campbell has led numerous collaborative projects with clinicians at Fox Chase and outside institutions. Since 2016, as Co-Director of the Immune Monitoring Facility, he has designed and interpreted flow cytometry-based correlative studies for immunotherapy clinical trials. His work has identified biomarkers predicting responses to immunotherapies and potential targets for additional immune interventions.
Dr. Campbell leads a research team studying NK cell biology in cancer, directing both the Cell Culture Facility and the Immune Monitoring/Cell Sorting Facility. His lab has extensive experience with primary human NK cell culture, genetic manipulation, and advanced techniques in protein biochemistry and molecular biology. The lab's recent work focuses on clinical and translational research, studying immune cell phenotypes in cancer patients and mechanisms of action of immunotherapeutic agents that exploit NK cell function.
