Assoc. Prof. Dr. Gülten Polat is an active faculty member in the Department of Civil Engineering at Yeditepe University's Faculty of Engineering, holding the academic rank of Associate Professor since 2022. Her research bridges geophysics and civil engineering with a focus on seismic risk assessment and tectonic analysis.
Her educational background includes:
- PhD in Geophysics, Boğaziçi University, Kandilli Observatory and Earthquake Research Institute (2006-2019)
- PhD in Seismology, University College Dublin (2008-2014)
- MSc in Geophysics, Boğaziçi University, Kandilli Observatory (2000-2006)
- BSc in Geophysical Engineering, Dokuz Eylul University (1995-2000)
Research Focus: Polat specializes in seismic anisotropy, crustal tomography, and cultural heritage conservation against seismic hazards. Her work employs advanced techniques like shear wave splitting and surface wave analysis to investigate tectonic structures in Turkey, Ireland, and the Eastern Mediterranean. She actively contributes to earthquake engineering through structural evaluations of historical monuments and seismic hazard modeling.
Recent publications (2020-2022) demonstrate a concentrated effort on Western Anatolian seismo-tectonics, b-value spatial analysis for seismic hazard mapping, and cultural heritage vulnerability studies. Earlier works established foundational research on Ireland's crustal accretion and Marmara region tomography, revealing consistent methodological rigor in geophysical data interpretation.
She has secured EU funding for the "New Directions in Seismic Hazard Assessment" project (2014-2015) and teaches Numerical Analysis to undergraduate students. While thesis supervisees aren't publicly listed, her departmental role includes academic advising responsibilities.
