Professor Göran K Hansson is a Senior Professor at Karolinska Institutet, affiliated with the Department of Medicine, Solna. He leads the Cardiovascular Inflammation Research Group under Peder Olofsson. With a medical degree (M.D.) and PhD in histology from Gothenburg University (1977 and 1980, respectively), he has held prominent roles including Chairman of the Nobel Committee for Physiology or Medicine (2004–2006), Secretary of the Nobel Assembly (2009–2015), and Vice Chairman of the Nobel Foundation (2010–2022). He served as Secretary General of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences (2015–2022) and holds memberships in prestigious institutions like Academia Europæa.
His research focuses on cardiovascular disease mechanisms, particularly the role of chronic inflammation and immune responses in atherosclerosis. Key goals include elucidating immunopathogenesis pathways and translating findings into clinical interventions. He pioneered discoveries linking T lymphocytes to atherosclerotic plaques, revolutionizing understanding of cardiovascular diseases.
