Gérard Eberl is a Professor and the Structure Manager Responsible at the Institut Pasteur in Paris, leading the research unit on Microenvironment and Immunity. His work is central to understanding the complex interactions between the host immune system, the gut microbiota, and the nervous system.

His research focuses on the fundamental role of the symbiotic microbiota in host physiology, particularly in the development and regulation of the immune system. He investigates the function of Innate Lymphoid Cells (ILCs) in mucosal defense and tissue homeostasis, and explores the emerging field of neuroimmunology, where he has demonstrated direct communication between gut bacteria, the enteric nervous system, and systemic immune and metabolic responses.
His recent publications reveal a strong trend in the intersection of immunology, microbiology, and neuroscience. His work frequently examines how microbial signals are sensed by neurons (e.g., via Nod2) to regulate appetite and inflammation, and how the brain responds to peripheral immune signals (e.g., IL-1β) to modulate systemic physiology. His research program is highly interdisciplinary, bridging mucosal immunology, microbial ecology, and neurobiology.
Dr. Eberl has supervised numerous PhD students and post-doctoral fellows, contributing significantly to training the next generation of scientists in the field of immunology and host-microbe interactions.
