Yasmine Belkaid is the Institute Director at Institut Pasteur, where she leads the Meta-organism research team within the Research Department. She is a leading figure in immunology, focusing on host-microbiota interactions, mucosal immunity, and maternal-child health. Her work bridges fundamental immunology with global health applications.
Belkaid’s research explores how the immune system interacts with commensal microbes at barrier sites like the skin and gut. Her team investigates the role of the microbiota in immune development, inflammation, and disease, with particular interest in maternal immunity, skin immunology, and neuroimmune crosstalk. Recent studies have uncovered mechanisms by which immune cells regulate lactogenesis, how hormonal signaling shapes skin immunity, and how neuroimmune pathways modulate adaptive responses.
Her recent publications, appearing in Cell, Science, and Nature Communications, reflect a strong trend toward systems-level understanding of immune-microbe-host interactions, integrating immunology, microbiology, metabolism, and neuroscience. Key themes include tissue-resident immunity, immune modulation by microbial metabolites, and sexual dimorphism in immune responses.
She has been recognized with prestigious honors, including:
- Member of the French Academy of Sciences
Belkaid mentors postdoctoral researchers and contributes to major educational initiatives, including the annual Pasteur Course on Mother and Child Health. She is also a vocal advocate for scientific freedom and international collaboration, having co-authored a high-profile call to protect researchers from political interference.
Her lab is actively involved in several cross-functional projects related to maternal and child health, antimicrobial resistance, and global immunology.
