Gwenllian Rees is a Lecturer in Veterinary Science at Aberystwyth University, School of Veterinary Science. She previously held research and teaching roles at Bristol Vet School, including as a Teaching Fellow in Farm Animal Population Medicine and Senior Research Associate. Her work is centered on antimicrobial resistance (AMR), antimicrobial stewardship, dairy cattle health, and evidence-based veterinary medicine.
Her research interests include:
- Antimicrobial use and stewardship in farm settings
- Ethnographic studies of veterinary and farmer decision-making
- Development and evaluation of veterinary guidelines
- Promotion of evidence-based veterinary medicine (EBVM)
- Sustainable farming and parasite control in livestock
Recent publications highlight her leadership in interdisciplinary research combining veterinary science, social science, and public health policy. Her work frequently addresses real-world challenges in antimicrobial prescribing, farmer behavior, and national policy development in Wales and the UK.
She has received notable scientific recognition, including:
- Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons' Impact Award (2021)
- Antibiotic Guardian Prescribing and Stewardship Award (2022)
Dr. Rees is actively involved in research leadership and professional service. She serves as Principal Investigator (PI) on multiple externally funded projects, including the Arwain DGC project, which trains Veterinary Prescribing Champions across Wales. She is Associate Editor of BMJ’s Veterinary Record Case Reports, Junior Vice-President of the British Veterinary Association’s Welsh Branch Council, and a Trustee of the Animal Welfare Foundation. She also contributes to national policy through membership in the Welsh Government’s AMR in Animals and the Environment Delivery Group and co-authored the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons’ EBVM Learning projects. Her work aligns with UN Sustainable Development Goals related to health, food security, and responsible antimicrobial use.
