Professor Gwen Moore serves as Professor of Music Education at Mary Immaculate College, Limerick, with over thirty years of experience spanning primary, secondary, and higher education levels. Since 2006, she has been integral to Initial Teacher Education programs and previously held the strategic leadership role of Director of Teaching and Learning (2016-2023), driving institutional and national initiatives in teaching, learning, assessment, and feedback. She currently holds editorial positions as Senior Editor of the ISME Routledge Book Series (2023-25) and Co-Editor of the International Journal of Music Education.
Her research critically examines structural inequities in music education through frameworks like Bourdieu's theory of cultural capital, focusing on social reproduction of musical value, unequal access to music education, and ideological dimensions of musical knowledge. She investigates practical applications including popular music pedagogy, informal learning approaches, and primary teachers' conceptions of musical ability, consistently advocating for democratized music education access. This work bridges theoretical rigor with actionable strategies for addressing systemic barriers in educational settings.
Moore demonstrates sustained leadership through her service as Chair of the Society for Music Education in Ireland (2013-2017 and re-elected 2022-24) and has secured multiple competitive funding awards supporting innovation in music education and teaching methodologies. Her editorial roles further amplify her influence in shaping global discourse through key publications in the field.
