Gwen Kay is a Professor and Graduate Program Director in the History Department at the State University of New York at Oswego. Her research focuses on the history of home economics education (1870–2000), bioethical questions in Upstate NY (1870–1900), and broader themes including the history of medicine and science, Progressive Era America, and women's history. She teaches courses such as American Medical Issues (HIS 368) and directs the American History Seminar (HIS 650).
Dr. Kay holds a Ph.D. in History of Medicine and Science from Yale University (1997) and a B.A. in Biology and History from Bowdoin College (1991). Her work has been recognized with awards like the 2005 American Nurses Association Book of the Year for her book "Dying to be Beautiful", and fellowships including the Inaugural Societe Chimie d'Industrielle Fellowship (1999).
Her publications explore topics ranging from FDA regulatory campaigns in the 1930s to gender constructs in interwar media. She has also received grants from institutions like the State Historical Society of Iowa and Texas Women's University Libraries.
Dr. Kay's advising and grants include leadership in the History Department's graduate programs and collaborative research on masculinity in media. She maintains active office hours in Park Hall and MCC 221A, emphasizing accessibility for students.
