Margaret Werth is an Associate Professor of Art History at the University of Delaware, part of the College of Arts & Sciences. She holds an M.A. and Ph.D. from Harvard University and previously taught at Barnard College, Columbia University. Her research focuses on 19th- and early 20th-century art, photography, and film, with an emphasis on interdisciplinary and intermedial approaches. Notable works include The Joy of Life: The Idyllic in French Art, circa 1900 (2002), analyzing mythic community and utopianism in French painting.
Her current research explores representations of the human face across painting, photography, and film (1860–1930), examining themes like subjectivity, identity, and technology. She organized a 2003 symposium on modern portraiture and has published essays on Picasso, Matisse, and Monet.
