Guy Mercier serves as a Full Professor in the Department of Geography within the Faculty of Forestry, Geography and Geomatics at Laval University. His office is located in the Abitibi-Price Pavilion (room 3169), and he can be contacted at (418) 656-2131 ext. 402574 or guy.mercier@ggr.ulaval.ca.
Education:
- Postdoctorate, Institute of Geoarchitecture of the University of Western Brittany, 1988
- Doctorate in geography, Université Laval, 1987
Research Interests: Dr. Mercier's work centers on Land use planning, Urban studies, Landscape and heritage, History and epistemology of geography, and Geography of Quebec. He is particularly known for his contributions to the understanding of cultural heritage and territorial development in Quebec, with strong emphasis on historical epistemology and regional landscape studies.
Research Affiliations: He is a regular researcher at the Interuniversity Center for Studies on Letters, Arts and Traditions (CELAT) and the Centre for Research in Territorial Development (CRDT), and an associate researcher at the Institute of Geoarchitecture (Brest).
Professional Activities: Dr. Mercier is a member of the Steering Committee of the Commission on the History of Geography (IGU), founder and co-director of the Geography collection at Laval University Press, foreign correspondent for the Annales de géographie, and serves on the editorial board of Geography Notebooks and the scientific committee of Semestrale di studi e ricerche di geografia.

Student Supervision: Currently supervising PhD students Jean-Bernard Giroux and Thu Thuong Do. Past supervisees include Sanghee Han (Master's, 2023), Jean-Bernard Giroux (Master's), and Alain Boucher (PhD).
