Dr. Gustavo A. Valbuena is a faculty member at the UC Berkeley-UCSF Joint Medical Program (JMP), where he serves as Head of the Problem-Based Learning curriculum. Prior to this, he was an Associate Professor with tenure at the School of Medicine of The University of Texas Medical Branch (2006-2015), focusing on infectious diseases research and education. He previously studied Medicine in Colombia and completed a combined residency in Pathology and PhD in Experimental Pathology at UTMB.

His research focuses on conceptualizing inquiry in medical education, its role in integrating basic and clinical sciences, and instructional design strategies to support this integration. He is currently pursuing a graduate degree in Health Professions Education through a collaboration between UCSF and Utrecht University Medical Center.
Dr. Valbuena teaches HMS 200: Foundational Sciences through Problem-Based Learning and has been involved in epidemiological research on rickettsial diseases earlier in his career.
