Bi-Hung Peng is an Associate Professor in the Department of Neurobiology at the University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB). His research focuses on the pathogenesis of intracellular bacterial and viral infections in the central nervous system (CNS), particularly examining CNS entry routes and blood-brain barrier integrity. He utilizes animal models, primary cell cultures (endothelium, neurons, astrocytes), human autopsies, and ECIS technology to study these infections. Additionally, he collaborates on evaluating pathological changes from West Nile virus, SARS, and MERS infections.
- Education:
- PhD in Experimental Pathology, UTMB
- MS in Experimental Pathology, UTMB
- MS in Agronomy, National Taiwan University
- BS in Agronomy, National Chung-Hsing University
Research Interests include:
- Neurovirology
- Viral pathogenesis in the CNS
- Blood-brain barrier disruption
- Cytokine signaling in infections
- Viral disease progression
- Medical education technology
Recent publications highlight research on SARS-CoV-2 sequelae, MERS-CoV modeling, West Nile virus immunology, and novel diagnostic platforms. His work bridges virology, neurobiology, and translational medicine, with a focus on zoonotic pathogens and their CNS effects.
Collaborations include work with virologists and immunologists on coronaviruses and alphaviruses. His teaching efforts involve modernizing medical education through virtual microscopy for histology, histopathology, and anatomy courses across multiple UTMB schools.
