Gustav Stålhammar

Gustav Stålhammar is an Adjunct Professor at the Department of Clinical Neuroscience, Karolinska Institutet, and a board-certified ophthalmologist and pathologist. He serves as Director of the St. Erik Ophthalmic Pathology Laboratory and leads a clinically focused research group dedicated to reducing mortality and morbidity from ocular and periocular cancers. His work spans translational research, clinical trials, and the application of AI for early tumor detection.

• Research Focus: Uveal melanoma (high-risk intraocular cancer), metastasis prevention, and prognostic testing via next-generation sequencing.
• Key Projects: Principal Investigator of the AMUM trial (adjuvant melatonin for uveal melanoma), development of AI algorithms to differentiate benign pigmented lesions from melanomas.
• Achievements: Ranked fifth globally for uveal melanoma research prominence (2025), awarded SEK 1.3 million from the Swedish Cancer Society.
