Dr. Steve Gurney is a Lecturer in the Department of Geography at the University of Reading. His research focuses on glaciology, geomorphology, and climate change impacts, with a particular emphasis on mountain glaciers and periglacial environments. He has conducted extensive fieldwork in regions such as the Cherskiy Range (northeast Siberia), Caucasus Mountains (Russia/Georgia), and Okstindan (Norway). His work integrates remote sensing techniques, field observations, and climatic analysis to study glacier recession, sediment transport, and the effects of historical climate variability.
Key contributions include the compilation of glacier inventories in Siberia and the Caucasus, analysis of Little Ice Age glacier extents, and investigations into superimposed ice dynamics in continental glaciers. His research often involves international collaborations, such as with Russian institutions and colleagues from Moscow State University and the Institute for Permafrost Research. Dr. Gurney’s studies highlight the vulnerability of mountain glaciers to contemporary climate warming and contribute to global understanding of cryospheric changes.
