Gunnar Cedersund is a Senior Lecturer and Associate Professor at the Department of Medical Technology (IMT) at Linköping University. He leads a 15-member research group focused on developing digital twins—interconnected, mechanistic, multi-level, multi-timescale, and multi-species models—for applications in eHealth, drug development, basic research, and artistic expression.
Education:
- M.Sc. Theoretical Physics, IFM, LiU
- PhD Modeling Biological Systems, ISY, LiU & S2, Chalmers
His research spans creating mathematical models (primarily ordinary differential equations) to understand biological mechanisms, individualize treatment, and replace animal experiments. Current projects include M4-health (VR-funded), knowledge-driven drug development with AstraZeneca, and hybrid modeling for stroke risk assessment. The group also explores artistic applications of digital twins, combining piano performance with dance.
Recent article trends focus on multi-organ modeling for diabetes, liver disease, and cardiovascular applications, with emphasis on validation against experimental data, replacement of animal testing, and integration with AI. Key themes include 4D flow MRI, metabolic flux analysis, and cross-scale modeling.
Scientific Awards:
- New Thinker (Nytänkaren) award 2015
His work is funded by the Swedish Research Council (VR-M, VR-NT), Swedish 3R Center (board member), and EU Horizon, with collaborations across academia, industry, and clinical settings.
