Gundula Muldner is an Associate Professor at the University of Reading with significant responsibilities including School Director of Postgraduate Studies, BSc Programme Director, and Part-time Student Tutor. Her academic career focuses on the intersection of archaeology, anthropology, and scientific analysis.
Muldner specializes in stable isotope analysis of bone for dietary reconstruction, nutritional anthropology, and bioarchaeology. Her research interests encompass dietary changes related to cultural and socio-economic transitions over the past 2000 years, as well as questions of diet, health, and social identity in historical contexts. She has developed expertise in applying scientific methods to archaeological questions, particularly through the analysis of human and animal remains.
Her publication record demonstrates consistent research activity spanning from 2007 to 2023, with a focus on isotopic approaches to understanding past human behavior. Her work shows particular strength in British archaeology, Roman studies, and medieval dietary patterns, though she has also contributed significantly to research in continental Europe, the Near East, and beyond. The breadth of her collaborative work is evident in her numerous co-authored publications across multiple journals.
Muldner has supervised various postgraduate research projects on topics including regional variation in Roman diet, skeletal pathologies, and childhood health trends leading to the Black Death. Her methodological expertise in stable isotope analysis has made her a valuable collaborator on numerous archaeological projects requiring scientific approaches to dietary reconstruction.
