Guillermo Marshall is an Associate Professor of Strategy and Business Economics at the Sauder School of Business, University of British Columbia, and holds the UPS Foundation Chair in Regulation and Competition Policy. He specializes in Industrial Organization, Innovation, and Competition Policy, with a focus on market dynamics, regulatory frameworks, and strategic behavior in industries.
His research addresses topics such as vertical integration effects, innovation incentives, energy conservation contests, and the design of competition policies. Notable contributions include analyzing the competitive impact of vertical integration in multiproduct firms and the role of product markets in fostering innovation. He has published in top journals like the Journal of Political Economy, American Economic Review, and RAND Journal of Economics.
Marshall’s recent work explores energy conservation strategies in low-income countries through contests, merging design in airline industries, and the implications of weakened patent rights on drug innovation. He has received the IJIO Best Theoretical Paper Award (2019) for his work on innovation and competition.
He teaches courses on Business Strategy, Climate Economics, and Industrial Organization at the MBA and PhD levels. His research is supported by initiatives like the King Climate Action Initiative (K-CAI), focusing on cost-effective energy conservation in Vietnam through behavioral interventions.
