Guillaume Carnino is a Lecturer at the University of Technology of Compiègne, affiliated with the COSTECH research laboratory (EA 2223). His research explores the historical foundations of technology, with a focus on industrial quantification, computing, and data centers. Carnino holds a doctoral thesis (2011) in History of Science, Technology, and Societies from EHESS, complemented by degrees in sociology (University of Caen), philosophy, and history (Paris X-Nanterre), and a computer engineering diploma from UTC.
His work examines epistemological shifts in technological knowledge from the 19th century to contemporary digital infrastructure. Key research areas include the environmental impact of data centers, repair cultures in technical history, and critiques of automation narratives. Recent publications analyze industrial definitions, cloud computing sustainability, and global technological exchanges.
He co-directs the GDR 2092 research network on techniques and production history and serves on scientific committees for technology history collections. His pedagogical activities include courses on the culture and history of techniques, addressing themes from Renaissance innovations to modern digital society.
