Prof. Dr. Gudrun Gersmann holds the Chair of Early Modern History at the University of Cologne, focusing on Western Europe from 1650–1800. She leads research projects at the Chair of Early Modern History and collaborates with the Historical Institute and the Research Center for the History of Cologne.
Her research integrates digital humanities and citizen science, exemplified by projects like "Wallraf digital" (2016–2018) and "Creating flexible digital access to knowledge" (2019–2022). She co-founded the MAP-Lab publishing platform and edits the book series Transgressions. Interdisciplinary Studies on the Early Modern Period and Humanities in the Digital Age.
Recent projects include analyzing urban history sources from the French period in Cologne (1794–1815) with the citizen science group KölnErforschen and digitizing the collections of the former Cologne Jesuits. She emphasizes knowledge transfer through digital media, academic podcasts, and public workshops.
Her team has published extensively on topics spanning the history of education, media communication, and urban development, with a focus on the interplay between historical research and contemporary societal challenges like post-factual discourse.
