Sten Grillner is a renowned Professor and Director of the Nobel Institute for Neurophysiology at the Karolinska Institutet. He holds a Dr of Medicine and PhD in Neurophysiology from the University of Göteborg (1969). His research focuses on the cellular and network mechanisms underlying vertebrate motor behavior, particularly locomotion. Grillner has served as Chairman of the Department of Neuroscience (1993-2000) and led the Network program for Neuroscience/Psychiatry at KI (1996-2006). He is a member of prestigious academies, including the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences and the National Academy of Sciences (USA).
Key research interests include spinal cord circuits, neural oscillations, and evolutionary conservation of basal ganglia. Grillner has supervised over 50 PhD students, contributing to groundbreaking studies on lamprey locomotion and neural network dynamics. Awards include the Kavli Prize in Neuroscience (2008) and the Royal Swedish Academy's Florman award (1977). His work integrates experimental and computational approaches to understand how neural circuits generate complex behaviors.
