Ann M. Graybiel is an Institute Professor and Professor in the Department of Brain and Cognitive Sciences at MIT, and an Investigator at the McGovern Institute for Brain Research. She joined MIT's faculty in 1973 and holds the Rosenblith Professorship in Neuroscience. Her research focuses on basal ganglia neurobiology, learning mechanisms, and their roles in habits, cognition, and neuropsychiatric disorders such as Parkinson’s disease and addiction.
Graybiel earned her Ph.D. in 1971 and has been recognized with prestigious awards, including the National Medal of Science (2001), the Kavli Prize in Neuroscience (2012), and membership in the National Academy of Sciences. Her work explores neural plasticity in cortico-basal ganglia circuits, emphasizing how these systems encode procedural memories and habits.
- Key Research Themes: Habit formation, basal ganglia dynamics, Parkinson’s disease mechanisms, and neural representations of sequential actions.
- Labs/Teams: Graybiel Laboratory, McGovern Institute.
Her contributions bridge neurobiology and clinical applications, with findings influencing treatments for movement disorders and neuropsychiatric conditions.
