Dr. Grigoriy Sereda is a Professor in the Department of Chemistry at the University of South Dakota's College of Arts & Sciences. He earned his Ph.D. in Chemistry from Moscow State University in 1992 and worked in research and education in Russia and Wisconsin until 2002 when he joined the USD faculty. Promoted to Associate Professor in 2007 and achieving full Professor status later, he has established himself as a leading researcher in nanotechnology and organic chemistry with a focus on practical applications.
Dr. Sereda's research spans organic synthesis, catalysis, surface chemistry, and nanotechnology with specific emphasis on targeted drug delivery systems. His work bridges fundamental chemistry with biomedical applications, particularly in cancer therapy and dental applications. He has developed innovative approaches using mesoporous silica nanoparticles for colon cancer treatment and repurposed dental desensitizing particles for targeted drug delivery.
His recent publications (2021-2025) demonstrate consistent productivity across multiple high-impact journals and patent applications, with research trends showing a strong focus on stimuli-responsive drug delivery systems that release therapeutic agents in response to specific biological conditions like pH changes or enzyme activity. His work increasingly integrates computational methods with experimental approaches.
- 2024 Cutler Award in Liberal Arts of the USD College of Arts & Sciences
- USD President's Award for Research Excellence - Innovation and Entrepreneurship category (2015)
- Member of the National Examination Committee of the American Chemical Society (2012)
- Tenure Appointment, University of South Dakota (2008)
- Individual SEED Award, State of South Dakota (2005)
- Governor's Award for Teaching with Technology, State of South Dakota (2003)
Dr. Sereda currently advises five graduate students working on diverse projects spanning cancer therapeutics, dental applications, and plant biotechnology. His well-funded research program (with active NIH, NSF, and foundation grants from 2022-2026) provides substantial support for student researchers. His lab functions as an interdisciplinary hub where students gain experience in organic synthesis, nanomaterial preparation, and device fabrication while working on projects with real-world applications in healthcare.
