Dr Greta Werner is a Postdoctoral Researcher at The University of Sydney, affiliated with the Sydney Environment Institute. She currently serves as Co-President of the International Sociological Association’s Research Committee 43 (Housing and Built Environment) and co-convenor of the Urban Sociology thematic group at the Australian Sociological Association. Her roles include enhancing governance transparency in international committees and organizing academic events like the TASA Urban Sociology stream. She has also held local government experience as a councillor at Bayside Council (2021–2024), combining academic and community engagement.
Her research focuses on urban and regional development, particularly social housing policy, climate resilience in housing infrastructure, and regional migration dynamics. Key interests include analyzing political discourses around urban planning and the socio-spatial impacts of housing movements.
Recent publications address topics like solidaristic housing movements, urban futures projections, and place-based population management strategies. Collaborative work includes a 2024 AHURI report on regional Australia’s growth challenges. She secured a 2025 Australian Sociological Association grant to convene an urban sociology workshop.
Her professional activities include board governance reforms for international research committees and academic conference coordination. She advocates for interdisciplinary approaches to urban challenges through workshops and policy-oriented research.
