Gregory Wolniak is a Professor of Higher Education Administration at the University of Georgia's McBee Institute of Higher Education and holds roles as Principal Researcher at Mathematica, Inc., and Faculty Affiliate at Northwestern University's School of Education and Social Policy. He earned his PhD in Social Foundations of Education from the University of Iowa, an MA in Economics from the University of Illinois at Chicago, and a BS in Economics from Iowa State University.
His research focuses on socioeconomic effects of college, student development, college access, financial aid transparency, and career transitions. Key interests include how college impacts learning, economic outcomes, and institutional policies related to tuition and financial aid.
Wolniak's work has been featured in outlets like The Atlantic and The Chronicle of Higher Education. He has secured over $1.5 million in grants from organizations including the Horatio Alger Association and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. His recent publications examine gender differences in leadership aspirations among disadvantaged students, the influence of socioeconomic status on college outcomes, and the impact of pandemic disruptions on student motivation.
He serves on editorial boards for the Journal of Higher Education and Teachers College Record, and advises on initiatives like the Institute for Justice and Opportunity’s College Initiative. Teaching responsibilities include courses on higher education finance, research methods, and enrollment management.
