Brian P. McCall is a Professor at the University of Michigan, holding appointments in the Marsal Family School of Education, the Department of Economics (College of Literature, Science, and the Arts), and the Gerald R. Ford School of Public Policy. He also serves as a visiting fellow at the Oxford Centre for Higher Education Policy Studies and has held visiting roles at Cambridge University, Dalhousie University, and UC Berkeley. Additionally, he is a co-editor of the Economics of Education Review.
His research focuses on the economics of education, labor economics, and program evaluation. Key areas include the impact of tuition subsidies and financial aid on college attendance and outcomes, the role of family wealth in educational decisions, and the effects of education on labor market outcomes such as job displacement and unemployment insurance utilization. His work also examines repeat use of unemployment insurance systems and its economic implications.
McCall teaches courses such as Economics of Education, Quantitative Methods in Educational Research, and Topics in Higher Education, emphasizing applied econometric techniques and policy analysis. His grants include studies on merit aid impacts, student loan defaults, and the influence of high school curricula on college success.
He has led research projects funded by grants such as Studying Heterogeneity in the Impact of Merit Aid Receipt and Loss (2024–2026) and Family Wealth and College Choice (2014–2016), contributing to policy debates on education finance and labor market dynamics.
