معرفی
Gregory W. Horndeski is an Adjunct Associate Professor of Applied Mathematics at the University of Waterloo and an internationally recognized artist based in Dallas, Texas. After earning his Ph.D. in Applied Mathematics in 1973, he served as Assistant and then tenured Associate Professor at Waterloo before leaving academia in 1981 to pursue painting full-time. In February 2022 he returned to the university as an adjunct associate professor.
Education
- Ph.D. in Applied Mathematics, University of Waterloo (1973)
- Undergraduate studies in Physics, Washington University in St. Louis
Research Interests
Horndeski’s scholarly work focuses on scalar-tensor field theories—particularly the general second-order scalar-tensor equations he first derived in his 1974 paper. These equations, now known collectively as “Horndeski theory,” have become central in modern cosmology for modeling inflation in the early universe and the accelerated expansion driven by dark energy.
His research blends rigorous applied mathematics with foundational questions in general relativity and cosmology, and he remains active in the field, co-authoring recent review essays and delivering invited lectures at international conferences.
Scientific Impact & Recognition
Although he has not collected formal scientific awards, Horndeski’s 1974 paper has garnered over 3,200 citations (Google Scholar, August 2025) and inspired a dedicated conference—“Horndeski Gravity: 50 Years On”—held at the Perimeter Institute and University of Waterloo in July 2024, where he was guest of honor.
Artistic Career
Beyond academia, Horndeski is an established painter known for large-scale poured-acrylic knife paintings. He has sold more than 460 works, placed pieces in eight museums, and represented Texas at the Groninger Museum in the Netherlands (1986). His dual career illustrates a rare integration of scientific and artistic creativity.
