Professor Gregory Price is a distinguished academic in Earth Sciences at the University of Plymouth, serving as Chair in Earth Sciences and Postgraduate Research Coordinator in the School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences since 2019. He previously held the role of Associate Head of School (Research) from 2017 to 2019 and was a Visiting Scholar at James Cook University, Australia, in 2011. His international research profile is underscored by leadership roles in NERC programs and global geological working groups.
His research expertise lies in palaeoclimatology, stable isotope geochemistry, and stratigraphy, with a focus on the Jurassic and Cretaceous periods. He investigates greenhouse climate dynamics, carbon cycle perturbations, oceanic anoxic events, and polar environmental changes. His work integrates sedimentology, petrology, and clumped isotope analysis, often using material from deep-sea drilling projects and field sites across Siberia, Spitsbergen, Morocco, and the UK.
His recent publications reflect a strong trend in quantitative palaeoclimate reconstruction, geochemical analysis of marine sediments, and regional stratigraphic synthesis. These works span topics from Late Cretaceous sea temperatures to the environmental legacy of historic mining, demonstrating both deep-time and applied environmental relevance.
His scientific recognition includes:
- Member, Geological Society of America
- Member, European Geosciences Union
- Member, Berriasian Working Group (International Subcommission on Cretaceous Stratigraphy)
- Deputy Director, NERC ARIES DTP
- Committee Member, NERC Ion Micro-Probe Steering Group
- Associate Editor, Proceedings of the Geologists Association
- Former NERC Peer Review College Member and Secretary of the British Sedimentological Research Group
Professor Price has supervised over ten PhD students, including researchers on Permian-Triassic extinctions, Cenomanian-Turonian boundaries, Arctic Svalbard stratigraphy, and rare metal nodules. His teaching emphasizes sedimentology, stratigraphy, isotope geochemistry, and fieldwork, closely integrated with his research. He contributes to the UN Sustainable Development Goals through climate and environmental research.
He leads and collaborates on major research initiatives, including NERC-funded projects and international stratigraphic working groups, often involving multi-proxy data integration and global paleoenvironmental modeling.
