Sietske Batenburg

Dr. Sietske Batenburg is an Assistant Professor in Stratigraphy & Paleontology at Utrecht University's Faculty of Geosciences. Her research focuses on paleoclimate and paleoceanography during greenhouse periods like the Late Cretaceous and Eocene, emphasizing orbital forcing's role in climate systems and refining the Geologic Time Scale through cyclostratigraphy. She uses neodymium isotopes to study ocean circulation and deep-water formation. Previously, she held positions at institutions including the University of Portsmouth, Goethe University Frankfurt, and the University of Oxford before joining Utrecht in 2024.

She serves as a voting member of the ICS Cretaceous Subcommission and an advisor to the Geological Society of London’s editorial committees.

Publications highlight her expertise in cyclostratigraphy, ocean acidification, and Cretaceous climatic transitions. Collaborations include global initiatives like the CycloNet network. Current projects involve refining Eocene and Cretaceous timescales through multi-proxy analyses.
