Gregory Phillips is a Professor at the University of Georgia's College of Veterinary Medicine, affiliated with the Department of Infectious Diseases and Physiology and Pharmacology, and the Isakson Center for Neurological Disease Research. His research focuses on microbiome interactions, infectious diseases, and neurological processes. He holds a Ph.D. in Genetics from the University of Georgia (1987) and postdoctoral training in Molecular Biology at Princeton University.
- Education: B.A. (1979) Biological Sciences, Southern Illinois University; M.A. (1981) Microbiology, Southern Illinois University; Ph.D. (1987) Genetics, University of Georgia; Postdoctoral Fellowship (1990) Molecular Biology, Princeton University.
Research interests include live biotherapeutic development, microbiome-neurological links, bacterial pathobionts, and antimicrobial persistence. His work spans microbiology, molecular biology, and neuroscience, with over 60 peer-reviewed publications. Phillips has contributed to advancements in bacterial protein export mechanisms, plasmid engineering, and microbial community analysis in clinical contexts.
His studies on the microbiota-gut-brain axis and defined microbial models (e.g., Altered Schaedler Flora mice) have advanced understanding of host-microbiome interactions. Collaborative projects include work on Haemophilus parasuis genomics and bovine mastitis microbiota profiling.
