Gregory Maertz is a Professor of English at St. John's University, affiliated with the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. His academic career spans over three decades, with expertise in Romanticism and Fascism Studies, particularly focusing on Nazi-era visual arts and Modernist cultural production. He holds a Ph.D. in Comparative Literature from Harvard University (1988) and has conducted extensive research in Germany, including at the Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg.

Research Interests: Dr. Maertz’s work bridges Romantic literary studies and Nazi art history. His scholarship uncovers hidden archives of Third Reich art, challenging post-war narratives of cultural suppression. He has curated major exhibitions like Kunst und Propaganda im Streit der Nationen 1930-1945 (Berlin, 2007) and Art in Battle (Bergen, 2015), exploring Nazi Modernism and its legacy.
Recent Publications & Exhibitions: His upcoming monograph Modernism and Nazi Painting (Palgrave Macmillan) re-examines suppressed Modernist works. Current projects include Art of the Third Reich: An Anthology, blending texts and visual artifacts. Recent articles analyze Nazi cultural policies, denazification, and post-war art recovery.
Awards & Grants: Recipient of NEH, ACLS, and Gerda Henkel fellowships, he has also received St. John’s Faculty Recognition Awards and Seed Grants. His work was highlighted at the National Humanities Center and the Institute for Advanced Study.
Teaching & Service: Courses include Art and Propaganda, Literature and Art of WWII, and graduate seminars on Modernist aesthetics. He has advised numerous grants and chaired committees on curriculum and research at St. John’s.
